Ausgangspunkt ist meine HD-Videokamera, die ich aus
einer Zeichnung und einer Klopapierrolle gefertigt
habe. Als Objekt war sie schon sehr schön, zudem
fand ich heraus, dass sie auch funktioniert. Beim
Hindurchschauen durch die Rolle schließt man
automatisch das eine Auge, um mit dem anderen
durch die Klo-Rolle zu lugen; und durch Veränderung
des Abstands von Kamera und Auge lässt sich zoomen.
Wie bei einer wirklichen Video- oder Fotokamera
zeigt sich in der Totalen alles gleichzeit: Zangen,
Eimer, ein Glas, eine Hand, ein Fuß sind zu sehen;
durch Fokussieren hingegen lässt sich der
Ausschnitt einer Zeichnung betrachten: ein Zeh,
Fingernagel oder gar die Struktur oder Manier des
Pinselstrichs, der Zeichen-Linie.

Wenn nun eine Differenz zwischen dem menschlichen
Sehen und dem Sehen der Apparatur besteht, wie in
der Theorie der Fotografie sowie in der Philosophie
nachzulesen ist, dann wird mittels meiner Kamera
einer dieser Unterschiede, dass der Apparat durch
ein Auge sieht, das menschliche Sehen hingegen sich
durch zwei vollzieht, aufgehoben.

Ich habe diese Beobachtungen zum Anlass genommen, mich
mit dem Sehen zu beschäftigen. Eine Illustration aus
Ernst Machs Antimetaphysische Vorbemerkungen,erschienen
in Die Analyse der Empfindungen und das Verhältnis des
Physischen zum Psychischen, beschäftigte mich; meiner
Meinung nach ist sie ein Beispiel für eine Art sub-
jektives Sehen. Das subjektive Sehen, der eigene Blick
spielt in meiner Arbeit eine wichtige Rolle, und wie
Ernst Machs Illustration Selbstschauung „Ich“
thematisiert die Ausstellung Meine Optik ein Innen
und Außen, den Zeichner und das Gezeichnete.

The starting point is my HD videocamera which I
fabricated using a drawing and a roll of toilet
paper. As an object the camera was already very
beautiful, but then I discovered that it actually
works. When looking through the paper roll, one
automatically closes one eye to look through it.
With the other eye along with the change of
distance from the camera to the eye, it is
possible to zoom. As with a real photo or video
camera, in the wide shot everything is shown at
once: pliers, buckets, a glass, a hand, a foot
can be seen; whereas through focusing you can
only see an extract of a drawing: a toe, a
fingernail or even the structure or manner of
a brushstroke of a drawn line.

If there is a difference between human sight and
the sight of the apparatus as it is described in
the theory of photography as well as in
philosophy, then by employing my camera the
difference that the apparatus sees through one
eye and the human sight occurs through two eyes,
is abolished.

I took these observations as an opportunity to analyze
sight. I became curious about an illustration from
Ernst Mach’s Introductory remarks: antimetaphysical,
which appeared in The Analysis of Sensations and the
relation of the physical to the psychical. In my
opinion it is an nexample of a kind of subjective
sight. Subjective sight, one’s own view, plays an
important role in my work and just like in Ernst
Mach’s illustration Self-inspection of the Ego,the
theme for my exhibition My Optics is the inside
and the outside; the drawer and the drawing.
